Dato’ Shamsul Azhar bin Abbas, aged 58 is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS).

YBhg. Dato’ Shamsul Azhar holds a degree in Political Science from Science University of Malaysia, a Masters of Science Degree (M. Sc.) in Energy Management from University of Pennsylvania, USA and a Technical Diploma in Petroleum Economics from Institute Francaise du Petrole (IFP), France.

YBhg Dato’ Shamsul began his career in the oil and gas industry when he joined PETRONAS in 1975. In PETRONAS, YBhg Dato’ Shamsul held various senior management positions including Senior General Manager, Corporate Planning & Development Division, Vice President, Petrochemical Business, Vice President, Exploration & Production Business and Vice President, Logistics & Maritime Business.

On 1 July 2004, YBhg Dato’ Shamsul was appointed the President/Chief Executive Officer of MISC Berhad, the shipping subsidiary of PETRONAS, and served in the position until 31 December 2008. During the said period he continued to be a member of the Management Committee of PETRONAS and was also the Chairman of PETRONAS Maritime Services, a Director on the Boards of Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad, NCB Holdings Bhd, The London P & I Club as well as a Council Member of American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Bureau Veritas.

Since then, he was appointed as a Resource Person for PETRONAS which task entails him to also sit as a Board Member in various companies within the PETRONAS Group whilst continuing to act as the Chairman of AET Tanker Holdings Sdn Bhd. He was appointed as Chairman of MISC Berhad on 10 February 2010.
