Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn. Bhd. and Akademi Laut Malaysia Partners Yayasan Sarawak and University of Technology Sarawak to Support Maritime Education Excellence in East Malaysia

Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn Bhd (MMASB) and Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) are pleased to announce a significant step forward in their commitment to maritime education and training in East Malaysia through a strategic partnership with Yayasan Sarawak and University of Technology Sarawak (UTS)

Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn Bhd (MMASB) and Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) are pleased to announce a significant step forward in their commitment to maritime education and training in East Malaysia through a strategic partnership with Yayasan Sarawak and University of Technology Sarawak (UTS).

This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in advancing maritime education and industry in the region. By leveraging the expertise and resources of MMASB, ALAM, Yayasan Sarawak, and UTS, the partnership aims to enhance the quality of maritime education, training, and research activities in Sarawak.

ALAM, renowned for its excellence in maritime education and training, brings its extensive experience to the collaboration. Operated and managed by MMASB, ALAM will contribute its expertise in curriculum development, training methodologies, and industry connections to ensure the highest standards of maritime education are delivered.

Yayasan Sarawak and University of Technology Sarawak bring valuable local knowledge and academic resources to the partnership. Through their involvement, the collaboration aims to address the specific needs and challenges of the maritime industry in Sarawak, fostering economic growth and sustainability in the region.

The alliance between MMASB, ALAM, Yayasan Sarawak, and University of Technology Sarawak signifies a unified effort to elevate maritime education and training standards in East Malaysia. As the maritime industry continues to evolve, this collaboration will play a crucial role in preparing the next generation of maritime professionals and driving sustainable development in the region.

Key provisions of the strategic partnership include:

  • Joint Organisational Activities: The Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn Bhd and University of Technology Sarawak will jointly organise and participate in various training sessions, scholarly activities, seminars, workshops, and conferences aimed at benefiting academic staff, non-academic staff, and students from both institutions.
  • Exchange of Information and Expertise: The MOU facilitates the exchange of information, expertise, and experience in areas such as digital transformation, Artificial Intelligence, and human capital development, with a focus on achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Plan.
  • Collaborative Research: Collaboration on the development of research projects and publications to advance knowledge and innovation in their respective fields.
  • Student and Staff Exchange Programs: The MOU promotes the exchange of students, teaching staff, and researchers between the two educational institutions, fostering cross-cultural learning and collaboration.
  • Alternative Academic Pathways: The parties will explore the offering of alternative academic pathways and financial assistance programs to support the educational and professional development of students.
  • Alignment with the Sarawak Government Initiatives: Sarawak Foundation, Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn Bhd and University of Technology Sarawak will explore potential future collaborations aligned with the Sarawak Government’s annual budget, leveraging opportunities for further growth and impact.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between MMASB and Yayasan Sarawak was signed today by Mr. Eddie Ahmad Khodzali, CEO MMASB and Tuan Haji Mersal bin Abang Rosli, Director of Yayasan Sarawak 

The witnesses of the signing were Dr. Hamdan Suhaimi, Ketua Eksekutif Akademi Laut Malaysia and Mr. Jolly bin Marikan, Assistant Director (Corporate)

Meanwhile, the MOU between ALAM and University of Technology Sarawak was signed by Dr. Hamdan Suhaimi, Ketua Eksekutif ALAM and Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohammad Shahril Bin Osman, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic)

The witnesses of the signing were Ts. Dr. Capt. Manivannan, Deputy Ketua Eksekutif and En. Mohd Ian Daim Bin Mahmud, Corporate Administration, University of Technology Sarawak

The MOU will be effective from the date of its execution for a period of 3 years.

About Yayasan Sarawak

The Sarawak Foundation was established under the Sarawak Foundation Ordinance as a Statutory Body on 27 May 1971.

Their objectives as in the Ordinance are:

  1. To grant scholarships or to provide financial assistance of any form for the peoples of Sarawak, in particular, and to any Malaysian citizen, in general, to pursue their education in schools, colleges, universities or institutions of higher learning within Malaysia or abroad on such terms and conditions as the Board deems fit;
  2. Actively to promote improvement of opportunities for education for the peoples of Sarawak in particular and Malaysia in general, both locally and in any institution of higher learning throughout the world, but especially the Universities in Malaysia;
  3. To grant, and arrange for the award by other bodies of, scholarships or other educational assistance for the peoples of Sarawak or any Malaysian citizen whenever it deems fit to do so;
  4. To give assistance and provide relief, to any person whose circumstances are, in the opinion of the Board, considered to be deserving of such assistance or relief;
  5. To provide assistance, by way of loans, grants or otherwise, to organizations or institutions which are organized and governed for scientific, medical, educational, welfare, social or charitable purposes; and
  6. To make contribution and provide assistance towards the relief of national emergencies or calamities.
